Summer Plan: Part 2, Jobs/Internships

Is your student planning on staying in Oxford this upcoming summer? Whether they are taking a summer intersession course or just simply wanting to stay in town, a great way for them to occupy their spare time is with an internship or job. Internships are a great way for your student to build their resume. Almost every job nowadays requires some relevant work experience. Similarly, jobs are a great way to gain experience or earn some extra money.

Here are some ideas and options for your student to consider:

Internships:

662 Marketing/Parents of Ole Miss: We are looking for summer interns! Students studying IMC and Journalism are highly encouraged to apply. Business and Marketing Corporate Relations majors are also welcomed to apply. Interested applicants should send resumes or inquiries to devin@662marketing.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

Oxford Police Department: The OPD is looking for summer interns who are majoring in criminal justice and are enrolled in CJ490. To apply call (662) 232-2400 and ask for Valerie.

Yoknapatawpha Arts Council: The arts council is a unique summer internship opportunity open but not limited to IMC, Marketing, Hospitality, and Journalism students. The internship focuses on the planning of the Arts council’s August festival. Students interested in applying are encouraged to bring their resume to the office located in the Powerhouse on University Avenue.

Ole Miss Athletics Foundation: Looking to get your foot in the door in the world of college athletics? The Ole Miss Athletics Foundation is looking for an Outbound Sales and Development Intern for the upcoming summer. They are seeking 4-5 students majoring in Marketing, Sales, Sports Management, Business or related fields. To apply, email a resume and cover letter to Hailey Gilleland with the subject line “Outbound Sales and Development Intern Application.” Applicants must apply by April 12.

Jobs:

Golf Courses: Having three golf communities in town (Mallard Creek, The Links, and The Ole Miss Golf Course) makes Oxford a prime place to apply for jobs. There are several opportunities at the course, such as working in the pro shop, being a cart attendant, or even serving as a caddy. Be sure to regularly check the courses’ websites or give them a call!

Restaurants: Oxford is full of good places to eat. It seems like a new restaurant is popping up around town every day. This makes restaurants an ideal place to hunt for jobs. Two restaurants in town that are actively seeking summer employees are Mugshots and Crave. Mugshots is a sports bar and grill known for their juicy hamburgers. They will be hiring waiters/waitresses and hosts/hostesses. Crave, on the other hand, is a dessert and coffee bar. Their menu has everything from s’mores pie to banana pudding to cappuccino. They are seeking sales associates this summer!

Oxford Wine & Spirits: Oxford Wine and Spirits is a local liquor store located off of College Hill Road. This is not your average liquor store; they have a unique luxurious feel and an exceptional selection of wine and spirits. If your child is looking for summer employment, this is an option they should consider. To apply, stop by the store and fill out an application.

Housing Complexes: With the student population at Ole Miss increasing every year, more and more student housing complexes are being built across town. Complexes such as the Retreat, Uncommon, the Domain, and the Hub are looking for staff members to join their teams. To apply and stay updated on their positions, visit their websites, check their social media pages, or give them a call!

Staying in Oxford for the summer has many perks. Many locals say you can enjoy the small town even more when the roads have less cars and the square is not as noisy. Having a job or internship allows students to hang around longer while earning an income. The jobs and internships listed here are just a few of the many summer employment opportunities in Oxford. If your student is interested in staying in town, encourage him or her to look and ask around for open positions.
